Have you ever stopped to wonder where and how the French Renaissance actually began?
Unless you’re an art historian, you might not know that the story starts in the charming Loire Valley town of Amboise, France.
It’s here that France began to trade medieval fortresses for elegant châteaux, practicality for beauty, and a way of life that celebrated creativity, learning, and yes…good food and good wine.
Much of the credit belongs to King François I. Young, ambitious, and endlessly curious, he returned from his military campaigns in Italy captivated by the Rennassaince flourishing there.
He invited architects, artists, craftsmen, and scholars to France, transforming his kingdom into a center of innovation and beauty. His greatest invitation, of course, was to Leonardo da Vinci, who spent the last years of his life in Amboise at Clos Lucé. Legend tells us the king often visited the aging master, eager to learn from one of history’s greatest minds.
The Renaissance wasn’t just about magnificent châteaux, although the Loire Valley certainly has those in abundance. It was about embracing curiosity, celebrating craftsmanship, surrounding yourself with beauty, and believing life is richer when you make time for art, conversation, delicious meals, and the simple pleasure of lingering a little longer around the table. Now that’s a philosophy I can wholeheartedly embrace.
Perhaps that’s why I love bringing travelers to the Loire Valley. We certainly admire the castles and marvel at centuries of history, but we also experience the region the way the French do. We stroll through blooming gardens, sip wines born from vineyards that have flourished for generations, share memorable meals, and discover that slowing down isn’t wasting time; it’s often the very best way to experience it.
As we wander the streets of Amboise, it’s easy to imagine the conversations that once unfolded there between kings, artists, and visionaries. Yet what strikes me most isn’t how different life was five hundred years ago. It’s how familiar the Renaissance spirit still feels. Curiosity, creativity, beauty, and gathering around a table never really go out of style.
